When Is It Launching
Apple’s fall event is expected to bring the Ultra 4 out alongside the Apple Watch Series 12 and the new iPhone lineup, following the same September announce-then-ship pattern Apple has used for years, with preorders typically opening within days of the keynote.
Design: The Slimmer Ultra
This is the headline change. Multiple reports converge on a case that’s roughly 10 to 15 percent thinner than the Ultra 3, aimed squarely at the biggest complaint about the current model: it’s bulky on smaller wrists. Apple is said to be restructuring the internal layout to make room for new features without growing the case, and a reconfigured sensor arrangement is part of that shuffle.
The display is also rumoured for an upgrade, with a brighter panel and thinner bezels expected to improve outdoor visibility, useful for the hikers, divers, and endurance athletes the Ultra line is built for.
A Long-Overdue Chip Upgrade
The Ultra 3 launched with the same S10 chip as its predecessor, meaning actual processing performance hasn’t meaningfully moved since 2023. That changes this year. Both the Ultra 4 and Series 12 are expected to ship with a genuinely new chip, likely branded S11, bringing the first real performance jump in several generations, and one that should pay off directly in Siri responsiveness once watchOS 27’s AI features are running on top of it.
Touch ID Might Actually Happen
Touch ID has been rumoured for the Apple Watch for years without materialising, but the Ultra 4 is where it keeps resurfacing most persistently. The leading theory places a fingerprint reader either under the display or built into the digital crown or action button. It’s not confirmed, and Apple has a long history of testing this internally without shipping it, but the rumour has more traction here than it does for the standard Series 12.
Health Tracking: Blood Pressure Takes Centre Stage
As with the Series 12, blood pressure monitoring is the feature generating the most buzz. Reports point to an enhanced notification system designed to flag abnormal cardiovascular patterns, which would be meaningful for anyone managing hypertension or simply keeping an eye on long-term heart health.
Non-invasive blood glucose monitoring is mentioned as well, but most reporting treats it as further out. Apple is said to be pursuing regulatory approval for the feature, which is typically a multi-year process, so it’s more likely to land on a future Ultra than on this one.
Battery Life
Battery life is where the Ultra series already dominates, and the Ultra 4 is expected to push that lead further. Some reports point to efficiency gains from the new chip alone, while more aggressive rumours suggest as much as a 25 percent improvement over the Ultra 3. Nothing is locked in yet, but a step up from the current multi-day stamina looks likely rather than optional.
Software: watchOS 27
Like the rest of the 2026 lineup, the Ultra 4 will run watchOS 27 out of the box. The standout addition is a more capable Siri built on Apple Intelligence, with rumours pointing to a personalised AI wellness concierge that pulls together health and fitness data into more actionable, conversational insights, rather than just raw numbers on a dashboard.
Should You Wait for It
Ultra 3 owners debating whether to hold off should watch two things: whether blood pressure monitoring ships as rumoured, and how meaningful the slimmer redesign feels in person. Neither is guaranteed to be worth an upgrade on its own, but together they’d make a strong case.
For anyone on an Ultra 2 or earlier, the combination of a new chip, a genuinely different case size, and the sensor overhaul makes the Ultra 4 a much easier recommendation.
First-time Ultra buyers should wait. Between the redesign and the health tracking upgrades, this is shaping up to be the most significant Ultra release since the original model.
